Chemical Engineering

Chemical Engineering

B.Tech. — 4 Years

Chemical Engineering is a versatile branch of engineering that applies principles of chemistry, physics, mathematics, biology, and economics to efficiently design, produce, transport, and transform energy and materials. It spans from nanotechnology and nanomaterials in the laboratory to large-scale industrial processes that convert raw materials, chemicals, living cells, microorganisms, and energy into valuable products. The Department of Chemical Engineering at St. Michael College of Engineering and Technology is committed to providing quality education, fostering innovation, and developing technically competent and socially responsible chemical engineers. The department equips students with strong theoretical knowledge and practical skills through well-equipped laboratories and industry-oriented learning.

Vision & Mission

Vision

To become a preeminent Chemical Engineering Department renowned for delivering exceptional education, empowering graduates to emerge as trailblazers in both chemical engineering and related disciplines.

Mission
  • Empower students with quality education in chemical engineering and associated disciplines, fostering technical acumen, critical thinking, and a strong sense of social and environmental responsibility.

Laboratory Facilities

Practice-oriented computing laboratories that support core, advanced, and emerging areas of Chemical Engineering.

Mechanical Operations Laboratory
Mechanical Operations Laboratory

Focuses on bulk solid handling, particle sizing, and industrial separation methods. Equipped with ball mills, jaw crushers, sieve shakers, and filter presses. Offers hands-on training in size reduction and slurry filtration techniques. Supports the core curriculum for the course Mechanical Operations. Prepares students for engineering roles in mineral and pharmaceutical processing.

Heat Transfer Laboratory
Heat Transfer Laboratory

Equipped with industrial shell-and-tube, double-pipe, and finned-tube heat exchangers. Analyzes thermal energy transport, insulation properties, and industrial cooling networks. Calculates heat transfer coefficients and thermal efficiencies under real conditions. Supports the core curriculum for the course Process Heat Transfer. Teaches students to safely optimize energy conservation in massive factories.

Mass Transfer Laboratory
Mass Transfer Laboratory

Facilitates molecular separation, mixture purification, and phase change engineering. Features fractional distillation columns, liquid-liquid extraction units, and packed absorption towers. Teaches students to manipulate equilibrium boundaries to purify complex chemical mixtures. Supports the core curriculum for the course Mass Transfer Operations. Grounds students in the scaling principles needed to manufacture high-purity goods.

Chemical Reaction Engineering Laboratory
Chemical Reaction Engineering Laboratory

Engineers the scale-up of molecular reactions from beakers to factories. Runs comparative testing using batch reactors, CSTRs, and Plug Flow Reactors (PFR). Calculates chemical reaction rates, activation energies, and product conversion yields experimentally. Supports the core curriculum for the course Chemical Reaction Engineering. Reveals how reactor geometries and temperature profiles impact industrial factory output.

Process Dynamics & Control Laboratory
Process Dynamics & Control Laboratory

Commanding the digital brain of chemical processing through plant automation training. Features automated control valves, PID controller modules, and PLC/DCS software interfaces. Tests real-time system responses to sudden, simulated industrial process upsets. Supports the core curriculum for the course Process Dynamics and Control. Teaches students how to configure automated feedback loops for total safety.
